why milk in the first place? comadre con leche was the original title of this blog and comadre con leche is still the name of my blogging alter-ego. what follows is an explanation of the origins of this name.
i have a huge hispanic family. my dad was born in mexico and so were all of my grandparents except one. we are all very close with our extended family. we are all practicing Catholic and traditional in many ways but i’d like to think also very progressive.
anyway, godparents are a big deal to us. those two people who baptize you are like your second parents. and for parents, choosing godparents for your child is important, like choosing CO-parents. in spanish, mother is madre and father is padre. that’s where we get COmadre and COMpadre.
my sister is a single mother since march of 2007. a gorgeous baby boy who is now a year old and who i absolutely adore. since i’m his godmother it’s totally justified. my uncle (mom’s youngest brother) is the baby’s godfather and we have a little inside joke.
remember the the deliciously terrible ‘tween flick “she’s all that” from the late 90s? well the younger brother in the movie greets his sister’s date during one random scene with this ridiculous greeting, “mi compadre con queso!”
one time, i greeted my uncle (the baby’s godfather and therefore my new compadre) with that same greeting. he was a little confused until i explained it to him, we had a good chuckle and he came up with my nickname… comadre con leche.
i guess i’m the milk to his cheese? we’re the metaphorical dairy to baby’s spiritual needs? i don’t know but i thought it was funny.

here we all are at the baptism that started it all, july 2007. that’s my sister holding her baby and that’s me in front of my compadre who always makes silly faces
